Frequently asked questions
- What is a panchang?
- Panchang ("five limbs") is the Vedic calendar's five daily elements: tithi (lunar day), nakshatra (the Moon's lunar mansion), yoga (a Sun-Moon combination), karana (a half-tithi) and vara (weekday). Together they describe the character of a moment, and are the basis for choosing an auspicious time (muhurta) for an event.
- Why does this show the panchang for a specific time, not just 'today'?
- Tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana all change at a specific moment during the day — not at midnight. Traditional panchang tables anchor the day's headline values to local sunrise; this tool asks for an exact time instead of silently assuming sunrise, so what you see is exactly the moment you asked for, not a convention you weren't told about.
- What is a muhurta?
- A muhurta is a chosen, traditionally favourable window of time for starting something — the same five panchang elements are what such a choice is usually based on. This calculator gives you the raw elements for any date, time and place so you can check a specific window yourself.
- How is karana different from tithi?
- A tithi spans 12° of the angle between the Sun and Moon; a karana is exactly half of that, 6°. There are two karanas in every tithi, so a full lunar month has 60 of them: one fixed karana at the start, seven movable ones repeated through the month, and three fixed ones at the end.
