Moon sign calculator
Find your Vedic Moon sign — your rashi in the sidereal zodiac Jyotish uses. It is very likely not the Moon sign a Western app would give you: the two zodiacs are measured from different starting points and have drifted apart by close to a whole sign.

Frequently asked questions
- What is a Vedic Moon sign?
- Your Vedic Moon sign, or rashi, is the sign of the sidereal zodiac the Moon occupied at the moment you were born. Jyotish (Vedic astrology) treats the Moon sign, not the Sun sign, as the primary placement for personality and mind — the opposite emphasis to Western sun-sign astrology.
- Why is my Vedic Moon sign different from my Western Moon sign?
- Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, fixed to the seasons; Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac, fixed to the actual background stars. The two have drifted apart by about 24° over the centuries (a gap called the ayanamsa), which is usually — though not always — enough to shift a placement into the neighbouring sign.
- Does my exact birth time matter for my Moon sign?
- Less than for almost any other placement. The Moon spends roughly two and a quarter days in each sign, so even an unknown birth time (we substitute local solar noon) gives the correct sign unless you were born close to the moment the Moon changed signs.
- Is my Moon sign the same as my nakshatra?
- No — they measure the same Moon position at two different resolutions. A rashi (sign) spans 30°; a nakshatra spans 13°20′, so each rashi contains a little over two nakshatras. The nakshatra is the more specific placement.
