Why the exact minute matters more here than elsewhere
The ascendant moves through all 12 signs once a day — about one sign every two hours, or 1° every four minutes. That makes it by far the most time-sensitive placement in the chart: a birth-time error of even 15–20 minutes can shift the sign, and every house counted from it. Every other calculator on this site tolerates an unknown time reasonably well; this is the one where we genuinely need the minute. If you don’t know it, we will still compute an answer but mark it clearly as unreliable rather than presenting a guess as fact.

What is a lagna?
Lagna, or ascendant, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of your birth. In Jyotish it becomes your first house, and every other house follows from it in order — so it sets the framework the rest of the chart is read against.
Why does the exact birth time matter so much more for lagna?
The ascendant completes a full circuit of all 12 signs roughly once every 24 hours — about one sign every two hours, or 1° every four minutes. Your Moon sign or nakshatra barely moves in that time, but your lagna can change entirely within twenty minutes, which is what makes birth-time accuracy the single biggest source of error in a Vedic chart.
What if I don't know my exact birth time?
We will still compute a chart — substituting local solar noon — but we mark the lagna and every house position as unreliable, in the result itself, rather than presenting a guess as fact. If you can find a birth certificate or hospital record, it is worth the effort specifically for this placement.
How is lagna different from my Moon sign or Sun sign?
Moon sign and Sun sign describe where two specific planets sit; lagna describes where the horizon itself sits. It isn't a planet's position at all, which is why it needs the birth time and location together, precisely, in a way even the Moon sign does not.
